About Upstate Medical University
SUNY Upstate is one of 140 academic medical centers, and the only one in Central New York. We are an upper-division transfer and graduate school. Our campus is part of a vibrant University Hill area that includes Syracuse University and SUNY Environmental Science & Forestry. Upstate’s tuition is lower than that of private universities.
Our Mission
Upstate’s mission is to improve the health of the communities we serve through education, biomedical research and health care.
Our History
Upstate traces its origins to 1834; the year Geneva Medical College was founded. The college disbanded in 1871 and its assets became part of Syracuse University, which sold the medical school to the State University of New York in 1950.
Our Structure
Upstate Medical University includes four colleges:
- College of Graduate Studies (biomedical science research)
- College Health Professions
- College of Medicine
- College of Nursing
Our total enrollment is about 1,600 students. We also boast a growing biomedical research enterprise, and the region’s only Level-1 trauma center, children’s hospital and cancer center.
About Syracuse
Syracuse is a college town that offers both an outstanding quality of life and affordable living. Our university puts you in the heart of New York’s fourth-largest city. Central New York has long enjoyed a reputation as a comfortable place to live, with high-performing schools, cultural offerings and sporting events, a wealth of beautiful parks, lakes and four-season recreational opportunities — and short commutes.
